meet me monday-nov16

November 16, 2009

Hey gang! I wanted to post something this morning, but had a lack of inspiration…

Enter Ramblings of a Health Student! and her Meet Me Monday!

So, I’m going to leave you with 5 things you may not know about me…

1. I hate having my hair wet… really hate it. HATE.
2. I love science fiction, and in my opinion, the crappier the effects/acting/storyline/basic-effing-premise… THE BETTER.
3. I don’t like salad. Flat out. I would rather eat a handful of lettuce by hand then have it tossed in bowl with dressing and other bits of things.
4. I know it is a flaw, but I want people to like me… I want them to think I am a valuable person. And maybe I shouldn’t care what others think/say, but I can’t help it… I do.
5. I will do ANYTHING for you. really, thats another pseudo flaw, because sometimes even if it is bad for me emotionally or psychologically, I’ll still go the extra mile for you.

Were any of these surprising for you? did anyone already know all of these things about me?

If you do your own Meet Me Monday, let me know! I want to read them! :D

Uprinting Giveaway Winners!

November 15, 2009

Hey guys!

I don’t have a TON of time to blog today, because I’ve gotta tidy up my house before the week starts, but I wanted to announce the winners of my giveaways!

I wanted to tell you the method of selecting them, just so you know.

Since I didn’t ask people to make a separate comment for each of 3 possible entries, some people wrote in one comment that they tweeted and or already subscribed! (which equals 3 entries!)

so, I just made a list in excel and entered the person’s name on the sheet 1-3 times, depending on their comment, and their subscriber status/tweets. Then I put that numbered list count into the Random.org generator, and VOILA! winners!!

So, without further adieu…

The TWO winners of 50 holiday gift cards are:

Emily of http://emilisha.wordpress.com/

RANDOM.ORG - True Random Number Service 11152009 11822 PM

and Heather of http://lazyheather.wordpress.com/

RANDOM.ORG - True Random Number Service 11152009 13142 PM

The winner of the 18×24 poster print is Jessica N.

RANDOM.ORG - True Random Number Service 11152009 11608 PM

The winner of the 16×20 canvas print is Penny!

and then dinner with some of my oldest and dearest friends. :D

In site news, I wanted to discuss a couple of points!

First, in my last post, I mentioned both Jess of Let’s Get Fit, and Katie of Life in the Fulmer Lane. Both of those ladies are awesome, and write wonderful blogs which I somehow forgot to link to… so here they are… show them a little love. :D

Also I have purchased a new domain name…

www.KelsBecomingBetter.com

This does NOT move my site, it does NOT require you to change your readers, it does NOT change my email address, but it does provide an easier link to remember, if you have trouble spelling kelsey or toney, or both. ;) Basically, in a world of catchy blog names, and blog names that indicate some of the content of a site, I thought it would be a good idea. :)

+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+

I’ve also done some work on the content of the site, adding a page for my links, reviews (under construction), and soon an FAQ page.

Please visit my links page, and make sure that your blog is included if you’d like it to be. Please leave a comment THERE if you’re not listed, but would like to be included. Chances are, if I read your blog and/or your interests jive with mine, you’ll be added. :)

My Health page has been up for a while, but it includes before and after photographs, as well as an overview of my story. :)

Don’t forget to sign up for my giveaways… I want you to win something awesome. :D

Guts and/or Glory

November 11, 2009

Well, Remember that time I used to run? haha.

Well, at the beginning of the year I went from barely being able to run for 30 seconds, to running 3 miles using the Couch to 5k program. It is an AMAZING program, and one that I recommend to all new runners, or people new to fitness, or to girls who just want to be able to finish a 5k without thinking that they’re going to have to be carted off the course after the .5 mile marker.

Anyway, I continued to work, building my way up eventually to one, gloriously difficult 5 mile run.

Then, things got in the way, it was the end of the school year, it was my last semester of grad school, it was time for summer internship, it was time to pack for my trip to Spain, and basically… running began to take a back burner.

That isn’t to say I didn’t stay active, I still did yoga, elliptical, and other random ventures like tennis… But I managed to convince myself to stick to that easy, comfy 3 miles and stop pushing.

I spoke to the ladies on the message board to corroborate my story. “I like running 3 miles. Three miles is fun and easy. Three miles makes me feel good. Three miles is meditative, and relaxing. So, basically, there isn’t any reason for me to try to run more.”

Now, to be fair, training for greater distances DID freak me out, but, duh, yea… that’s cause its HARD.

Doi.

Anyway, I’ve watched some of my peers, and fellow couch to 5k grads, like the lovely Jess of Let’s Get Fit, and Katie of Life in the Fulmer Lane (in a few weeks)  take on the 13.1… and I’m ready.

I am officially in training for the Dallas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half. :D

The old, lazy, frightened Kelsey is the one who would quit training because the easy way is more fun. The new me is going to take it head on. So… Wish me luck, but more than luck, wish me determination, focus, and resolve… because I’ll need that much more.

Have you run a half marathon? What training plan did you use?

Happy Fitaversary To ME!!!

November 9, 2009

(Don’t forget to enter all 3 of my great giveaways! You could win 50 holiday cards, an 18×24 poster print, or a 16×20 rolled canvas print! Good luck!)

Wow, Wow, WOW!!!

A year ago today, I took a fitness assessment that was provided for free at my job. At that assessment, things like my weight, bmi, body composition, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, etc. were measured. While most of my numbers were “normal” I was NOT happy. I weight over 170 lbs, and was not looking cute…

(check out my health page at the top of my site, or click here to see more before photographs)

Before:

IMG_2422edit

The number that threw my jaw to the floor was my % Body Fat. I had 38.1% body fat.

The now almost famous conversation that I had in my head went something like this, “Woa. 38%. That is almost 40%… THATS ALMOST 50%!!! I’m almost HALF FAT!!!”

That night, I went to the store and bought the 30 day shred DVD… and the rest was history!

I’m proud of the accomplishments that I’ve had this year:

  • I worked out 30 days straight when I thought it’d kill me
  • I went from running 30 seconds, to running up to 5 miles
  • I graduated from the couch to 5k program
  • I’ve completed 4 5k races
  • I’ve completed 1 4 mile race
  • I’ve lost and maintained around 25 lbs to date
  • I’ve become more balanced and flexible
  • I’ve gone from a size 16 to a size 8
  • I’ve CHANGED my diet significantly, adding healthy and wholesome food to most of my meals.
  • I’ve become a moderator or a national board related to health and fitness.
  • I’ve got a blog reach of over 100 (usually quiet, but wonderful) readers who help keep me accountable.

That is a pretty damn good year, if you ask me. :)

So, to the FITAVERSARY PART…

Today, the fitness wagon came by again, one year after driving through and changing my world.

I bounded into the room, ready and excited to see my numbers…

Here are some highlights:

Last Year This Year
Weight 168 146
BMI* 28.8 25.1
Body Fat % 38.1 25.8
Overall Wellness 72/100 91/100

Check out last year’s sad diagnosis…

Check out this year’s BEAUTY!!!!

THAT is meaningful change, people!

IMG_0078

I was LITERALLY glowing all day… My Jess-i-poo took some pictures of my happiness, so I could share my excitement with you fine people…

I posed with both of my reports, last year’s and today’s…

IMG_0067

I think this one says, “Hollerrr! I’m making myself the best me I can be and I have an abnormally huge smile!”

IMG_0072

I’ll close this incredible meaningful post (to me, anyway) with an excerpt from last year… the day after my 38.1% epiphany…

One of the most prevalent messages of the story [kung fu panda] was that, there is no “trick” to becoming who you are destined/meant/hoping to be… No self help book, no 30 day shred workout video, and no special website that will make that change happen. In the end, we have to decide to make that change ourselves.

Anyone who has known me for any length of time has undoubtedly heard one of the dozens of “I’mma change! I’m gonna get fit! I’m gonna finish an album! I’m gonna eat only organic! I’m gonna blog every day!” ;) But… maybe, just maybe… a day will come and those changes that I want to see in myself will be my day-to-day… moment to moment priorities.

Love you guys…
