Anyway, today was a GREAT day!

That’s a lie. It was an Okayyyy day, but I’m trying to be Positive! It is always hard to prepare for time away from the classroom. I’m always so anxious about leaving my babies. I’m so glad that I know they’re in good hands.

Today, I had my FAVORITE BREAKFAST OF ALL TIME!!! Yogurtoats, this time with the second new Greek yogurt candidate of the week, the Dannon Greek (strawberry). (Keep reading for my opinions of the NEW Greek yogurt candidates) Lunch was really, REALLY light, and I paid for it later, I had my very favorite green giant veggie steamer… but the whole serving is just 100 calories. Stupid. (I also had 4 cool ranch doritos, SCHWEET)

**An ODE to Yogurtoats…

Heather asked me in my last post about yogurt oats. I’m pretty sure that what I know and love as, yogurtoats is just “overnight oats” to the rest of the blogging world, but I don’t care. Yogurtoats rules for several reasons.

1. I don’t like cooked oats. I know! Everyone loves oatmeal! Oatmeal is the BEST thing EVER, but I can’t get past the gummy part, and I simply do not have the time/patience required to cook oats on the stove in the mornings (let alone wash out the pans)

2. More protein/FLAVA. Yogurt, especially Greek, adds a bunch of protein to the mix, and fats (assuming I’m not eating a 0% yogurt at the time) which keep me full and happy! Plus greek yogurt adds flavor which I love.

3. I’m not super into hot breakfasts. I dunno… hot breakfasts make me feel sleepy or something. The cool, brightness of tangy yogurt wakes me up (as do fresh cold berries/fruits) so, I like that a lot.

So, if you want to make yogurtoats the kelsnotchels way, here’s how I do it.

-Scoop 1/3 to 1/2 cups of thick rolled oats into a bowl (mine are almost always travel safe, cause I eat it at my desk)

-Top with yogurt of your choosing, I love Chobani 0%, Oikos, and the new Dannon Greek Yogurt best.

-Based on the “looseness” of the yogurt I’ll add some milk, just a splash (I prefer almond breeze or skim)

-Top with berries or fruit, (or nut butter, or agave, or any other crazy thing)

Now, I have a 10 minute commute (go ahead and hate) and that’s the perfect amount of time for mine to have the perfect consistency… the oats are still VERY MUCH RAW, and not soggy, but chewy. I’ve left it overnight before, but I prefer it this way.

—————–

On the subject of yogurt, I wanted to weigh in on the two newest contenders in our local stores. Yoplait and Dannon have jumped on the greek yogurt bandwagons and have greek yogurt stocked in our regular market! I bought one of each, both in strawberry and have sampled them in my yogurt oats today and yesterday (with the same recipe).

Yoplait

I thought the yoplait tasted “okay”… it wasn’t the worst yogurt I’ve tried, but it wasn’t my favorite. It was pretty stiff, and I thought it tasted a little fake. There were no pieces of fruit, it was just flavored. It wasn’t terribly smooth either. The nutrition facts were pretty good, 12g of protein, and more potassium than the Dannon… not to mention .7 more ounces of the stuff. It was okay, but if there is another kind on the shelf, I wouldn’t buy this kind again.

Dannon

The Dannon was a “fruit on the bottom” kind, it was a strawberry, syrupy, chunky layer under the yogurt, and I liked it quite a lot! It was pretty sweet, I’m not going to lie, but the pieces of actual strawberries kept it from feeling too artificial. It was VERY creamy, almost mousse like, and was very smooth. It was a little bit of a smaller portion, came in at 10 calories less, though, and still the same 12g of protein. I would definitely buy this one again.

Anyway, that’s enough yogurt talk for one night! I may actually write another post before bed, and set it to publish tomorrow while we’re on the road! My roadmates and I are excited and we’ll be driving to the ATX tomorrow before I know it!

Hey friends,

So, if I’m being honest… (and I am) I’ve been allowing my foot injury to keep me from doing any major calorie burning for about 2 months. Here is the timeline, as I figure it.

December 13th, I went for a 4 mile run. On the 14th, I woke up and could barely walk.

On January 1, I started practicing yoga at an amazing studio in my town, and I could NOT be more happy with the progress I’ve experienced in my yoga practice.

On January 21st, I went to the podiatrist for the first time, and learned that I have a textbook case of plantar fasciitis. I was prescribed NO weight bearing activity, but was told I could swim, use the recumbent bike, and do some yoga (careful with poses that cause me to be on my toes or apply great pressure to my feet (plank on toes, some lunging)

So… while I’ve done some walking, one jazzercise class (before I saw the doc), and yoga a couple times most weeks… I’ve not had a good hard sweat in a while.

Sad, isn’t it? I’ve wanted to run so bad, that I’ve let it sour my opinion of other activities and foster feelings of laziness!

So, today, I went to the school weight/equipment room, and went to town on the recumbent bike. It was pretty okay, made my knees feel a little weird… but it made me sweat, and I REALLY missed that!

As far as today’s eats, I started with yogurtoats, my favorite breakfast… I made it with the new yoplait greek (I’m testing the new yoplait and dannon varieties) topped with some fresh raspberries. As always, this always looks awful, but tastes YUM

Yogurtoats included-

-Strawberry Yoplait Greek yogurt

-bottom of the Bob’s Red Mill thick rolled oats, probably 1/2 cup

-8 or 9 raspberries

For lunch, we had a local dinner company bring some eats, I had about a 1/2 to 3/4 c serving of a mexican casserole, 2 slices of honeydew, and a few bites of a chicken tortilla soup broth, that was tomato based, (and totally chock full of cilantro, AKA DEVIL HERB so I hated it and didn’t eat more than a couple slurps)

In the afternoon, there was a giant bowl of banana pudding, and I had one teaspoon full. When I went back later to grab a pic… it was licked clean. haha. It was good.

I also had most of an apple later in the afternoon, and about 5 bites of a mushroom risotto that was going to be lunch, before I found it was catered.

Dinner, we decided fast food was on the agenda, as we’ve not stocked up on dinners at the store, so I had 5 nuggets from wendy’s most of a plain baked potato (with some newman’s ranch) and grapes. (I may have had a few bites of Daron’s frosty too. )

I’m sleepy, so I’m going to go to bed early tonight! I’ve got to get ready for my trip, 2 coworkers and I are going to Austin for a conference and we leave on wednesday! woot!

I want to thank you guys for your support in my dramatic heartfelt post yesterday. Squishy hugs for all of you.

In honor of the big game approaching in a few weeks, I’ve planned this product review + GIVEAWAY to coincide perfectly.

About 2 months ago (woops!) I got a GLORIOUS bundle from the precious Katherine @ Buffalo Nickel Wingers.

She told me, and I read on their website, that Buffalo Wingers are an all natural, potato snack that is a chip substitute of sorts.

She sent three flavors for me to try, which is great because, I am a recovering CHIP-o-HOLIC. I can go to town on potato chips, (and I have) but when I started counting calories, my regular trek to the vending machine was eliminated, as were my crunchy chips.

Buffalo Wingers are shaped like little chicken wings (legs? ) and come in a variety of flavors along the “heat index”. Here are my thoughts on the ones I tried.

First, I cracked open the No Bull Barbecue (heat level 1). Have you ever tried barbecue potato chips? They make me think of summertime, and I love them. These knocked those out of the park. Their shape made them VERY crunchy, they’re totally NON greasy (unlike their potato chip counter parts) and their flavor, totally awesome. Sweet and smoky, just how I like it.

Next was the Nacho Chilichanga (heat level 3), which, honest-to-goodness tasted like a cross between chili-cheese corn chips and nacho cheeze corn chips, but with all the crunch of potato. These were my favorite!! Doritos can bite me! These, were really good, a nice amount of flavor per piece, and of course, much less guilt.

Last (yes, I tried them in heat order because I was scared) was the Fiery Buffalo Bleu (heat level 5). These were my least favorite, but they still satisfied a snacky craving. The reason they weren’t my favorite was because there wasn’t as MUCH flavor as in the other, less spicy ones, probably so they wouldn’t over power, but I like my chips well doused in powdery-flavored goodness. So, good, but not my top pick.

Overall, I give these bad boys a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

If you’re mindful of calories, and are looking for chips that don’t pack such a caloric wallop, these could be your answer…

Don’t get me wrong. They aren’t “health food”, and they aren’t a staple in my diet. But I like chips, (I’m mourning the end of my chili chimichanga ones, and I CANNOT FIND THEM ANYWHERE!!!) But I definitely prefer to eat something that is natural to crap.

Maybe that’s just me.

So, if you want a brimming Super Bowl Stuffed Snack Pack, here is the deal:

You may have up to 3 entries for this giveaway. (US residents only, this time, kids.)

One of my bloggie besties, Nicci told me about these awesome crackers when we met for our blogger lunch/shopping trip, and I’m really excited that I was able to review them myself!

George from Dr. Kracker sent me a ton of items to try, including crisp flatbreats, culinary crisps, and snackers.

Review:

Dr. Kracker has beautiful packaging, which includes great graphics, and close up/clear shots of their chock-full-of-goodness crispies. The first item I tried was the Cherry Semolina Culinary Crisps and right away, I knew I was totally in love.

A snack lover already, I’ve eaten tons of chips, cookies, and crackers. These items are usually so stuffed with salt and sugar that my tastebuds don’t have any reason search for complex flavors or textures.

At first bite, I was taken aback by the lack of obvious salty or sugary coatings. That isn’t to say I missed it, mind you, because these boogers are REALLY tasty. I’m so excited that companies exist that are creating rich, complex, and flavorful snacks that are natural and bold in just the right ways.

I think my favorite Culinary Crisp was the Fire Roasted, because WOW. Brimming with black sesame seeds, sundried tomato, sweet potato, roasted peppers, and even a touch of cheese, these guys had my tex-mex-lovin-heart aflutter.

The flat bread was surprisingly good too. The pumpkin seed cheddar is my favorite. My husband said it best.

Wow… these taste like… well… exactly what it says it should taste like. Pumpkin seed and cheddar…Isn’t THAT a novel idea!?

Sure, the krackers were sent to me to try, free of charge, but I think you guys know me well enough to know that if I didn’t like them… I’d say so. These are great, and I’m really glad to have them in my healthy snack arsenal.

**Want to win a box containing 3 great products in 3 great flavors? Read on!!**

I won’t bog down this review with information about how these are 100% organic, or how they’re made in my own back yard (Dallas), or even that they’re made with 100% whole grain, are great sources of protein and fiber, and free of trans fats.

Just know that they are.

There is good stuff in this post ALL the way through, so read it all! haha!

Today’s eats included a couple of adventurous options… (read: we are almost totally out of food)

I started the day with an emergency banana and a Doctor Kracker Pumpkin Seed and Cheddar flatbread… (looks yummy, doesn’t it? keep reading!) I topped this bad boy with a serving of whipped cream cheese which REALLY made me happy. 60 calories VERY well spent!

I also did something that I rarely do, which is drink about 250ish calories with breakfast in the form of 2 cups of fruit juice that is left over (and otherwise going to be wasted) from thanksgiving. I don’t drink a ton of juice, but I was thinking of getting starbucks, or a giant coke today, *GASP* and figured, at least fruit juice is a LITTLE bit better than that… I’ll just convince myself that that pulp made a dent in my fiber needs.

For lunch, I had my second random meal, since, again, we’re TOTALLY out of food.

I had a grown up lunchable, comprised of a few slices of deli turkey on top of 8 Doctor Kracker Cherry Semolina Culinary Crisps! (VERY YUM… think THOSE look yummy too?? just get ready!) I also ate that colby jack stick which makes that about a 250 calorie lunch to offset my over 500 calorie breakfast.

At about 3, I scarfed a clementine… and debated having the pictured banana, but didn’t… I got so busy with finishing up work, parent phone calls, and getting to the grocery store.

note my red and green gmail theme! holla!

For dinner Daron and I caved and had Taco Bell… (At least I know @ChicRunner and @CNicRun won’t judge me… )

FITNESS

Tonight, I’m going to whittle my middle while watching BL.

**I hope I teased you well with my yummy Doctor Kracker snacks! One of my bloggie besties, Nicci told me about these crispy yums, and with one teensy email, I was rewarded with a giant box to try, taste, review, and GIVEAWAY!

That’s right, Giveaway time again! Keep your eyes open on Wednesday evening or Thursday Morning for my Doctor Kracker review, and Giveaway information!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Last but not least, my girl Nicci, who I mentioned above created an award for ladies who are doing what needs to be done to be fit and wonderful.

Just to add a little prestige to this bad boy, I’m going to bestow it to 5 lovely ladies who are recently/regularly/newly/consistently committed to becoming better!

1. Chris – She recently recommitted to her fitness routine, and 30 days of fitness, go YOU!

I do love chia seeds and have had them many times before, but when they go all fuzzy I have GOT to get them out of my teeth!!

My lunch was some left over thai, which I wanted to get some more value out of before throwing out… I had it with the regular steamed white rice from the restaurant, and had about 1/2 cup of rice with about 1/2 cup of a yellow curry/coconut milk/chicken/spicy deliciousness EXPLOSION!!

Man, I love this stuff… it is MUCH yummier than it looks.

I also received a tub of chex mix from a friend today, and I had a handful down, before I even knew it! I quickly tightened that lid and sealed it up! The handful pictured is NOT the one I ate, cause it was gone before I remembered to take a photo!!

I snacked on an apple, 8 almonds, and a blueberry oikos, because I needed something in my belly before tennis tonight.

Yes, you read that right… I had tennis tonight… practice 7 of 8… the last one is WEDNESDAY…

I’m looking forward to being done, because my focus has to be on getting a great foundation established on my runs. I think when it comes around again in Jan/Feb, it will be a great cross training activity, but right now getting home at 8 is just an extra stress.

I also received a tub of chex mix from a friend today, and I had a handful down, before I even knew it! I quickly tightened that lid and sealed it up! The handful pictured is NOT the one I ate, cause it was gone before I remembered to take a photo!!

FITNESS

So, before tennis, I set out to run a short 2 miles, and all was not well. I simply did NOT have enough fuel for that run. At 1.75 miles, I stopped to walk the last .25 because my stomach HURT with hunger, and I felt like I could pass out from the need for fuel.

I had just enough time to run to the grocery store and buy a bunch of EMERGENCY BANANAS!

Yup. I avoided the chips and candy, and got something that would REALLY make me feel better.

For dinner, I had a couple of chicken tamales, which hubby steamed for me, topped with some of Amy’s Chili (my favorite bean chili!)

I took a picture, but it looked to gross to post. haha. trust it was yummy.

Here is how I ended up calorically… A little low today.

Food calories consumed – 1,681

Exercise calories burned – 491

Net calories so far today – 1,189

I’ve got a little surprise for you in my next post… well, for those of you who liked it the last time I did it… haha.

Hey gang…

I hope you all had an amazing thanksgiving (if you’re in America!) And I hope you’re making the most of this holiday season.

I was supposed to be “off” for thanksgiving break, but as could be expected, vacation was spent being super busy, and bustling about in a holiday stupor. My MIL came in town on Wednesday and I’ve been go, go, go, ever since!

On Thursday, we went to my Grams house for thanksgiving dinner, which was absolutely delish. I had been looking forward to having a holiday meal in moderation, which I managed to do pretty well… (I enjoyed some turkey, potatoes, yams, green beans, cranberry sauce-which I lovingly prepared, and fruit salad) but I have to confess… that is when things went a little wrong.

Somehow, with company staying at our house, I went a little food crazy… and for pretty much every meal except thanksgiving dinner, I overate, and threw all caution to the wind. I haven’t eaten this badly in a LONG, LONG time. I might even say that I was binging for the past few days, and it has been a LONG time since my emotional eating was this out of control.

In the interest of full disclosure, lemme tell you about my crazy eats this week. :-/

Wed. Dinner- Fuddruckers turkey burger with fries

Thurs. Lunch- Thanksgiving food… and pie.

Fri. Lunch- Urban Crust pizza with my mom (a fire baked pizza with chicken, mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, caramelized onions, and truffle oil)

Fri. Dinner-Thai food including a thai tea, spring roll, lettuce wrap, and a coconut milk/chicken/yellow curry dish FOLLOWED by a spot of frozen yogurt @ yogurt story.

Sat. Lunch- Chicken enchiladas (no cheese) and tomatillo sauce from Blue Goose Cantina

Sat. Dinner- Chicken Express Chicken strips bonanza and a barrel of authentic southern sweet tea

Sun. Lunch- A piece of fried fish and mac and cheese from a crappy fast food sea food place…

To top it all off, I didn’t lift ONE finger or foot, as I’d planned in an effort to counter those calories…

THIS was when I finally went, WOA. STOP.

I have to say, friends, that I definitely buckled under some of the stresses and emotions that crop up during the holiday season.

I felt overwhelmed, tired, stressed, and alone… even while surrounded by my wonderful family and friends

Have you ever had a tumble off the proverbial wagon, that made you think you couldn’t get back on?

I’m so glad that I’ve learned a few things over the past year. Things that make me encouraged, and not defeated.

1. I am not the product of one bad decision.

2. It is NEVER too late, or too hard, or not worth it to make one tiny little choice that puts you back on track. (I’m reminded every time I look at my wrist)

3. I have to be kind to myself. So, I made some poor choices, and I gave into some negative thoughts and feelings… but I can DO ANYTHING… I have to love myself, and support my self through the tough times too.

It is easy to love yourself and feel good when you’re doing everything right. It’s a lot tougher to love yourself, when you feel like you’re your own greatest obstacle.

I’m feeling a lot better, and have made a couple of committments to help me stay on track for the last month of the Holiday Challenge!

To start things off, I registered tonight for something special…

What better way to reclaim the promises I’ve made to myself than by starting training this week!! I’ve been looking forward to training for a couple of weeks, and I’m so excited that it starts this week! This should be awesome (and hard) but really rewarding.

Also, I’m going to count calories via Lose It! again for a while… (this is the iphone app which has recently launched a website too!)

(If you’re on loseit! add me as a friend! The email address that I use there is kelseytoney @ gmail.com)

Anyway, I think this blog post was long enough. I’ll talk to you guys tomorrow.

Sunday, I had the awesome pleasure of meeting miss Nicole of NiccisNiftyEats!

We met at an awesome cafe which is attached to a great whole foods store in our area. Both of us have shopped here before, but never ventured into the cafe.

As their menu is online, I had a chance to decide what I wanted before I arrived.

I had a turkey and basil pesto Panini (with no cheese) which was also loaded with veggies like tomatoes, artichokes, and spinach. The bread was really, REALLY good.

I also enjoyed a cup of carrot juice!

As I was snapping a shot of my eats, I looked up and smiled as I saw this:

I knew we’d hit it right off.

I’d never met Nicole before, but have thoroughly enjoyed reading her blog. When I found out we lived in the same town… I knew a meet up was in order.

After escaping lunch on the beautiful patio without being stung by one of the many bees, we retreated inside and checked out some of the artwork on display in the cafe.

As we meandered through the market, I spotted my bff… silk holiday flavors… this is pumpkin spice, but I’m sure I’ll kill several silk nogs before the end of the season.

I also picked up some amazing grass, and almond butter packs,

and Nicole and I decided to be BRAVE and try synergy KOMBUCHA!

The following faces may not be suitable for young audiences

A few weeks ago, I got the amazing news from Caitlin at healthy tipping point, that my submission to her Operation Beautiful site had been selected for use in the book!

Caitlin, one of my favorite healthy living bloggers, started a movement earlier this year with the founding of her site Operation Beautiful.com. Operation Beautiful has a simple premise. Women can be hard on themselves, and hard on other women as well. In an effort to cultivate a culture of positive self esteem and self talk, Caitlin posted a note.

In a public place, she left a note for another woman to find, and told her that she was beautiful. A small gesture, but one that allows women to build each other up, and not tear one another down. When she was got word about Operation Beautiful being picked up for a book, she asked the blogging community to submit for consideration in the volume.

I am so excited to have been selected and I was even more excited to find that I was also selected by Caitlin as one of the 19 prize winners too! I can not WAIT for the book to come out, and for you my readers and friends to see my submission!

The other part of this entry, is about the great PRIZE that I won, for my submission! As lucky winner #6 I won a Variety Pack of Glo Bars from Angela at Glo Bakery!!

Angela sent me a box containing 11 Glo Bars! It contained:

6 Refresh Bars (Chocolate Peppermint)

2 Classic (Chunky Peanut Butter)

1 Revive (Dark Chocolate Chunky Peanut Butter)

1 Chi (Chia Seed)

1 Renew (Hemp and Chia)

Review:

Opening the Glo Bar, I was thrilled, because I love the quick and convenient package as much as the next girl! At first bite, I loved that it was softer than the Lunas that I usually eat. The texture was chewy, and chunky, but somehow smooth. The bars aren’t overly sweet, which I really love. I can say that at first, I wasn’t sure about the flavor, but as soon as it was off my tongue, I wanted another bite, and another, and I swear the flavor and taste gets better with every single bite.

You can taste the love that Angela bakes in these bars, and you can also taste the lack of chemically ickiness that is in lots of store bought bars. Incidentally, I didn’t even notice some of the chemical flavors in my other bars, until I tasted these vegan darlings.

I’ve gotten hooked on the Refresh bars (and I’m glad I got mostly those!) but I’ve also enjoyed the Classic and Revive. I had been looking forward to trying one of the more fruity bars, but I’m not complaining. What I received have been totally delish. Now my only worry is how much I’m going to want to keep these babies on hand.

Thanks so much to both Caitlin and Angela!
