One of my bloggie besties, Nicci told me about these awesome crackers when we met for our blogger lunch/shopping trip, and I’m really excited that I was able to review them myself!

George from Dr. Kracker sent me a ton of items to try, including crisp flatbreats, culinary crisps, and snackers.

Review:

Dr. Kracker has beautiful packaging, which includes great graphics, and close up/clear shots of their chock-full-of-goodness crispies. The first item I tried was the Cherry Semolina Culinary Crisps and right away, I knew I was totally in love.

A snack lover already, I’ve eaten tons of chips, cookies, and crackers. These items are usually so stuffed with salt and sugar that my tastebuds don’t have any reason search for complex flavors or textures.

At first bite, I was taken aback by the lack of obvious salty or sugary coatings. That isn’t to say I missed it, mind you, because these boogers are REALLY tasty. I’m so excited that companies exist that are creating rich, complex, and flavorful snacks that are natural and bold in just the right ways.

I think my favorite Culinary Crisp was the Fire Roasted, because WOW. Brimming with black sesame seeds, sundried tomato, sweet potato, roasted peppers, and even a touch of cheese, these guys had my tex-mex-lovin-heart aflutter. :)

The flat bread was surprisingly good too. The pumpkin seed cheddar is my favorite. My husband said it best.

Wow… these taste like… well… exactly what it says it should taste like. Pumpkin seed and cheddar…Isn’t THAT a novel idea!?

Sure, the krackers were sent to me to try, free of charge, but I think you guys know me well enough to know that if I didn’t like them… I’d say so. These are great, and I’m really glad to have them in my healthy snack arsenal.

I won’t bog down this review with information about how these are 100% organic, or how they’re made in my own back yard (Dallas), or even that they’re made with 100% whole grain, are great sources of protein and fiber, and free of trans fats.

Just know that they are. :)

What a beautiful glow!

November 8, 2009

A few weeks ago, I got the amazing news from Caitlin at healthy tipping point, that my submission to her Operation Beautiful site had been selected for use in the book!

Caitlin, one of my favorite healthy living bloggers, started a movement earlier this year with the founding of her site Operation Beautiful.com. Operation Beautiful has a simple premise. Women can be hard on themselves, and hard on other women as well. In an effort to cultivate a culture of positive self esteem and self talk, Caitlin posted a note.

In a public place, she left a note for another woman to find, and told her that she was beautiful. A small gesture, but one that allows women to build each other up, and not tear one another down. When she was got word about Operation Beautiful being picked up for a book, she asked the blogging community to submit for consideration in the volume.

I am so excited to have been selected and I was even more excited to find that I was also selected by Caitlin as one of the 19 prize winners too! I can not WAIT for the book to come out, and for you my readers and friends to see my submission! :D

The other part of this entry, is about the great PRIZE that I won, for my submission! As lucky winner #6 I won a Variety Pack of Glo Bars from Angela at Glo Bakery!!

Angela sent me a box containing 11 Glo Bars! It contained:

  • 6 Refresh Bars (Chocolate Peppermint)
  • 2 Classic (Chunky Peanut Butter)
  • 1 Revive (Dark Chocolate Chunky Peanut Butter)
  • 1 Chi (Chia Seed)
  • 1 Renew (Hemp and Chia)

Review:

Opening the Glo Bar, I was thrilled, because I love the quick and convenient package as much as the next girl! At first bite, I loved that it was softer than the Lunas that I usually eat. The texture was chewy, and chunky, but somehow smooth. The bars aren’t overly sweet, which I really love. I can say that at first, I wasn’t sure about the flavor, but as soon as it was off my tongue, I wanted another bite, and another, and I swear the flavor and taste gets better with every single bite.

You can taste the love that Angela bakes in these bars, and you can also taste the lack of chemically ickiness that is in lots of store bought bars. Incidentally, I didn’t even notice some of the chemical flavors in my other bars, until I tasted these vegan darlings.

I’ve gotten hooked on the Refresh bars (and I’m glad I got mostly those!) but I’ve also enjoyed the Classic and Revive. I had been looking forward to trying one of the more fruity bars, but I’m not complaining. What I received have been totally delish. Now my only worry is how much I’m going to want to keep these babies on hand.

Thanks so much to both Caitlin and Angela!

Struggling for balance!

April 19, 2009

I want to start off by thanking Sarah @ tales of expansion for the wonderful, wonderful Jasmine Tea Biscotti Bites!

A couple of weeks ago Meaghann from the inner workings of a college graduate held another blogging bakesale benefiting her team in training efforts! When I saw these, with jasmine tea, I knew I had to have them! :D

I love jasmine tea so much, and these are so great:

They have a mild sweetness, but they’re definitely not sugary. There is a slight chewiness, from the dried fruit, but an overall crunch that is completely satisfying. Best of all, the jasmine-y-ness is perfect. The tea flavor comes at the back end, almost a few seconds after finishing the cookie. The lingering aroma of jasmine tea after the bite is the best part. I LOVE that savory ending note, and I LOVE these bites. Total complete YUM.

______________
Now, once again, its been a few days since I’ve updated, and I’m sorry for that, but I am really having a bit of a struggle finding balance. A few weeks ago, I felt SO in control, and in just a short time, I’ve started to feel so… off. Basically, this semester of grad school is coming to a head, and I’m just tired. I love what I study, but this trio of classes, these 9 hours, have been the most grueling of the entire program.

There are several huge projects all coming due at close to the same time, and I’m having trouble finding time to study, get in 1 hour of excersize most days, keep up with my responsibilities around the house, and be a decent wife (and friend)…(and daughter)… (and teacher). Well, anyway, I’m just feeling a bit overwhelmed, and I’m ready for this semester of grad school to be over. OVER.

In other balance news, I FELL down during my run today! UGH. I was so pissed, I was either getting too tired, or hit a rock, or a bump in the sidewalk, or I’m just a clutz, but I sorta fell off to the side (I think it was on purpose that I went sideways) and my hip hit the grass by the sidewalk. I’m so glad I avoided slamming my hip into the concrete, and just hit the grass. Of course, my knight on his white horse SUV insisted on coming to pick me up, as I was about 1 mile away from home still. ;) very cute.

So, I’m totally okay, just bruised my pride a little.

In related news, I’m at over 4 miles per session, so that is awesome. :D

Best of luck to everyone running Boston tomorrow!!! Kick butt! :)

Goodnight!

*Note: I am reviewing this item in two parts. Part 1 is after day 1 of use. Part two will be after 2 weeks of use)

Item: Sportline S12

Purchased at: Walmart (I believe this is a Walmart only item)

Price: $38.77

Functions: Clock (time/date), heart rate zone monitor, resting heart rate tracking, alarm, chronograph, timer, dual time zone clock, pedometer, workout timer, calorie counter, distance calculator, speed (mph) calculator

Part 2 [Rating: 1/5]

Well, here is part two of my review of the sportline s12 heart rate monitor.

It is with great disappointment that I share that I will be returning this device tomorrow. During the 5k I ran on Saturday, after about 1.25 miles, the watch just sorta… reset. It suddenly had a new date, new time, wiped all of my step, milage, and distance data. HALF WAY THROUGH MY RACE. I was livid.

There isn’t any particular reason to draw my review out longer, it just didn’t do what it needed to do, when I needed it to do it.

(on another note, I’m not sure it was entirely acurate as a HRM, calories burned tracker, or distance keeper. Even with specific measurements of my stride, it was occasionally -inexplicably- off.)

Sorry, sportline… I really, REALLY wanted to like it.

Part 1 [Rating: 3.5/5]

I’ve been stepping up my fitness gradually since November, and I recently began training for my first 5k. While burying myself in message boards and websites dedicated to helping people improve their fitness level, I began to read about the glorious Garmin 305. As someone who’s been focused on fitness for all of 2.5 months, I wasn’t really comfortable shelling out $160-$300 for a device that I wasn’t even sure if I’d use.

So, yesterday, at the glowing goliath, I saw this little guy hanging in the fitness section.

Now, the primary functionality I wa excited about in the 305 was, tracking my speed, tracking my heart rate, and tracking my distance. After reading the box, and determining that this little baby did all of those things, I decided to grab it.

Today, I used it for the first time, and there were a ton of pros:

  • It is significantly smaller than the 305. I don’t know if the 305 would have been too big or not, but this one is definitely smaller.
  • It was pretty easy to set up. After determining my stride length, measuring my resting heart rate, and determining the ideal heart rate range I was aiming for, I was ready to go.
  • While running, I could glance down and check my speed which was great for determining if I was pushing hard enough.
  • It was easy to switch between speed, heart rate, and distance while running.
  • It tracked my steps (which I love).
  • You can stop the tracking process (stop the pedometer function) but you don’t have to clear the data right away, so you can track it/record it when you get home (see the cons list)

Now for the few cons:

  • It uses my stride length to determine my distance, not GPS… So, if I was super wrong about my stride length, or if my stride length changes significantly then I’d need to make an adjustment.
  • This little guy can’t compete with the computer interface of the 305. It does NOT connect to your computer, nor does it keep track of all of the goodies that the Garmin does. (but for $40 bucks, I’ll just open excel ;) )

All together, my day 1 assessment, is that I CERTAINLY got $40 worth of functionality. No. It is not as cool, shiny, or as technologically advanced as one that costs 5 times as much. However, if you’re just getting started, or unwilling to shell out that much green at the beginning of your fitness quest, or if you simply don’t have the cash available to spend on a big honkin one right now, so far, it seems that this thing will do the trick.

We’ll see how I feel after 1 week of use. :D
